2.1 The Campfire Spark

Image Prompt

A black and white woodcut style illustration of a small, crackling campfire in the dark woods, with sparks rising into the night sky.

A spark caught in dry cedar bark warms the dark for a night. By sunrise, only cold gray ash remains.

When night falls on the clearing, the forest becomes a wall of shadow. The silence is deep, but it is also vast. You gather dry twigs, strike a flint, and blow gently on the spark until the wood catches. A traveler, seeing the light from the ridge, walks down to sit beside you.

You do not build a heavy stone lodge for this traveler. You do not ask him to sign a treaty or claim a permanent residency in your valley. You simply share the flame. You tell a story, watch the embers glow in his eyes, and when the dawn comes, he continues on his trail.

The campfire is our web editor.

Tending the Fire

When you paste your words onto the home page of standard.garden, you are gathering twigs for a temporary fire.

Composting the Ash

Because this fire is lit without a permanent lease, it burns with a natural limit. In seven days, the wind will blow the cold gray ash away. The url will go quiet, returning the clearing to its pristine state.

If you want the fire to burn through the winter, you must carry the embers to your own permanent stove.
