5.3 Unobstructed Paths
A black and white woodcut style illustration of a traveler walking freely down a completely clear, swept forest path, unhindered by fences.
Do not build fences on the footpaths. Clear the branches from the trail so the traveler’s eye rests only on the trees.
The modern valley is crowded and noisy. If you wish to visit a friend’s cabin, you must walk through a tangle of tollbooths, signboards, and warning flags. Guardians at every turn demand your identity, write down your footprints, and try to sell you trinkets. Every step is blocked, and every gate is heavy.
This overgrowth is a disrespect to the traveler’s brief time on this earth.
When we tend standard.garden, we keep the trails clear.
The Swept Footpath
A guest who walks into our clearing finds an open, clean path of dirt:
- No Tolls: We do not ask the traveler to prove his identity or sign a logbook before he can read. He walks in, reads your story by the light of the fire, and goes on his way in peace.
- No Decoy Trails: We do not place flashing signs to pull the guest’s eyes away from your words. There are no recommended links, no advertisements, and no counting dials telling him how fast he must walk.
- Pre-cleared Paths: The leaves are swept, and the stones are set. Because we do not carry heavy, unnecessary baggage, the path opens in a fraction of a heartbeat. The visitor does not wait at a closed gate; the cabin door is already open when he arrives.
The Rule of the Blade
Before we lay a new stone on the trail or build a new bench in the clearing, we ask a single question:
“Does this branch block the traveler’s path or clutter his view?”
If it does, we take our blade, prune the branch, and throw it into the brush. The forest is beautiful because it is wild, but the path is useful because it is clear.
