5.1 The Gatehouse Keys

Image Prompt

A black and white woodcut style illustration of an antique brass pocket compass resting on a bed of moss, its needle pointing toward a hidden trail.

Press your thumb to the dial. The needle spins, clearing the heavy brush and revealing the trail that was lost.

When you wander the deep woods, the branches grow thick, and the trails cross in confusion. You cannot see past the next cedar stand. If you seek a specific grove or need to return to your workbench, hacking your way through the briars is slow, exhausting work.

But you do not have to wander lost.

In the ruins of the old stone gatehouse at the center of the valley, we found a weathered brass pocket compass. It does not point to magnetic north. It points to the landmarks of the garden.

This is the command dial (The Gate).

Consulting the Compass

Whenever you press your finger to the dial (typing :: anywhere or opening the Gate), the brass cover snaps open. A list of destinations appears on the compass face. You start typing the name of the clearing you seek, the needle aligns, and the brush parts before you instantly:

You do not need to navigate complex maps or drag heavy indicators across a screen. You speak to the compass, and the paths open.
